Tammy Delacruz. Door Hinges. November 26th , 2017.
Pivot hinges are made for overlay doors which are doors that rest over the door frame. One is attached to the top and one to the bottom. Portions of each are then folded over and recessed into the door and frame resulting in a concealed hinge. If open cabinets are a pet peeve of yours then the ever popular spring-loaded or self-closing hinge is for you. Built with a small spring inside the door automatically closes after it is opened. Youll never be annoyed by open cabinets again.
If you have concealed hinges and want to move to surface mounted cabinet hinges, chances are good that youll want to go with either semi-concealed hinges where only the frame wing is visible (the door part goes on the back side of the cabinet door), overlay hinges, or inset hinges. It just depends on the type cabinet doors you have. Before you redo all your hinges buy several different styles and finishes and put them on them in various parts of the kitchen. You can then get a sense of which works best for you from the standpoint of design and décor before going through the effort of replacing all the cabinet door hinges in the home.
When it comes to cabinet door hinges the right ones depend on the type of door you have. Basically there are three types of doors lipped, overlay and flush. The lipped door is one in which a lip has been cut completely around the door. The overlay door is cut larger than the opening so that its edges rest on the door frame. Flush doors sit inside the frame with their faces flush within it. Each type of door dictates different types of hinges. Pivot hinges, one of the most popular styles, are designed for overlay doors. One hinge is mounted on top the other on the bottom with portions of each screwed into the frame resulting in a concealed hinge.
Theyre small and inconspicuous, but they really hold a room together. No they are not throw pillows or candles. They are door hinges and they are in every room of your house. From the refrigerator to the cellar door you use them every day. Sure you dont really think about them, but can you imagine what life would be like without them? Your front door might be a large rock or chunk of wood. Or if you are not strong enough to move one of those you would climb a ladder and enter your home through the roof.
Another way to tell if it is a good idea to replace your doors with pre-hung replacements is if the rest of the doors already cant in their frames. You can square them yourself, but if you are planning to replace these doors, go for the pre-hung. They take much less time to replace and come in pre-finished or raw wood. One last thing, is your door a left- or right-hanging door? Hmmm...you think for a minute. Nope, you are sure you havent heard that one. Dont worry its easy. When you are buying any type of hinged door; storm door, entry door, and even cabinet doors, OR when you are buying hinged door hardware; hinges especially and sometimes latches, the salesperson will eventually ask you whether it is a right- or left-hanging door. The way you figure it out is, when you pull open the door; does it open to your left or to your right? Whichever way it opens is the answer.
