Theyre small and inconspicuous, but they really hold a room together. No they are not throw pillows or candles. They are door hinges and they are in every room of your house. From the refrigerator to the cellar door you use them every day. Sure you dont really think about them, but can you imagine what life would be like without them? Your front door might be a large rock or chunk of wood. Or if you are not strong enough to move one of those you would climb a ladder and enter your home through the roof.
Another type of door hinge that is similar to a butt hinge is the butterfly hinge. It also has two flaps or leaves held together by a pin, but instead of being recessed into the door and frame, they are mounted on the outside and when opened have the appearance of a butterfly in flight. These door hinges are highly decorative ranging in style from colonial to art deco and are used only on flush doors, usually for cabinets. T-strap door hinges are more commonly seen on garage doors or boxes because they lift up rather than out. So named because they are shaped like the letter T, the horizontal part attaches to the frame and the vertical part to the door. These hinges can also be plain and functional or ornamental.
There are several types of door hinge available. The most common is the butt hinge. This consists of two flaps with screw holes attached by a pin or a rod. To take the door down all you would have to do is remove the pins. You can choose to add finials or balls to the pins for a decorative touch. Garage doors are usually attached with T-hinges. Shaped like the letter T the horizontal part is attached to the door frame while the vertical part is attached to the door. These hinges can be plain or ornamental and lift up rather than out. If you have folding doors you might use a Soss hinge. Named for its inventor this door hinge is recessed into the door edges so when the door is folded it is completely concealed. It must be installed exactly or it will not work.
Hinges come in a seemingly endless variety of styles, sizes and shapes. But if you know the basics you will able to find the right ones for your project in a flash. Dont worry about whether the hinge is labeled left or right handed. All this means is what side of the door you are hanging the hinges on, but all you need to do is flip them over and you can use them on the other side. You may also be unsure of what size of hinge you need. As long as it is proportional to the size of the door you neednt worry. Hinges are extremely strong. In fact they are generally eight to ten times stronger than the job they are called on to do.
If you are replacing three-hole door hinges, you should start by putting in the middle screw first, then put in the bottom screw. Finally you should put in the top screw. If you repeat this on both the top and bottom of a cabinet door you will be able to keep your door in alignment. If you have two-hole door hinges things can get a little trickier. The easiest way to do them is to have someone help you. Their job will be to hold the door in place while you put the screws in. You can also balance the door on something while you put the screws in. But, this can be a little frustrating if the door moves or shifts before you get both screws in place.
