Tammy Delacruz. Door Hinges. November 23rd , 2017.
A room is not a room without a door and door hinges. If there were no hinges you would have either a wall or a hole in the wall. Without door hinges there would never have been the song lyrics nobody knows what happens behind closed doors", because doors couldnt have closed in order for secret things to happen behind them. You must be thinking there had to be something that was used before the shift was made to what we today know as door hinges. You would be right. What was around before hinges was portiers. These were large tapestries that were hanging in front of a big hole in the wall. They would block the entryway to a room and had to be pushed out of the way every time you wanted to go in or out.
Some are shaped like butterflies and others you cant even see. Some open with a pivot and others close automatically. There are many types of cabinet door hinge available, but we often dont even look at them in our own homes. We should because without them our daily lives would be harder. Hinges are generally eight to ten times stronger than the job they are assigned. So if your front door was off its hinges you have to have the strength to move it yourself. That is why before the hinge was in use many people entered their homes by climbing up a ladder and going through a hole in the roof.
When it comes to cabinet door hinges the right ones depend on the type of door you have. Basically there are three types of doors lipped, overlay and flush. The lipped door is one in which a lip has been cut completely around the door. The overlay door is cut larger than the opening so that its edges rest on the door frame. Flush doors sit inside the frame with their faces flush within it. Each type of door dictates different types of hinges. Pivot hinges, one of the most popular styles, are designed for overlay doors. One hinge is mounted on top the other on the bottom with portions of each screwed into the frame resulting in a concealed hinge.
Cabinet door hinges are one of the biggest afterthoughts in home design but they often get the biggest workout in the home. Nary an hour goes by that someone isnt opening a cabinet somewhere in the home, whether its in the kitchen, pantry, bathroom or hallway. Most simply make do with the hinges that came with the cabinet. Only when they begin to squeak and sway in complaint about their endless exercise do we give thought to changing them. And only then do we only change the offending hinge that has failed to do its duty tightly and quietly. But changing out hinges can yield some exciting results in the home, particularly when they are visible hinges.
Because visible cabinet door hinges are, well, always visible, they become expected and common place over time. Eventually, you dont even notice them anymore. At least until they become unhinged as noted above. With just a few twists of a screw, you can replace all your visible hinges with new ones that can breathe fresh life into your once boring cabinet doors. For example, many hinges come in silver or brass. Why not change it up with deep black, hammered copper or cast wax molded versions of antique hinges. If you have a rustic feel in your kitchen, you can decorate H or HL hinges that make your cooking space look like a turn of the century country kitchen.
