Most doors today are sold pre-hung, with hinges on them, when you get a new door it usually comes with factory standard door hinges. If you are remodeling you want to make sure the new door hinges fit the style of all the other ones in the house. Thankfully they are easy to swap out. The holes for door hinges are usually standard as long as you buy the same size that you had previously. The door hinges you have will likely have either two or three holes. How you change the door hinges depends on which style you have.
Butterfly hinges are really decorative butt hinges that when fully opened have the look of a butterfly. They are used only on flush doors and add a decorative touch. If you want your cabinets to close by themselves which is always popular you need a spring loaded cabinet hinge. So called because they have a tiny spring inside that when released closes the door by itself. As versatile as they are popular they can be used on all three types of doors. Once you have found the right type of hinges for your cabinets you get to have fun choosing the finish to match your other hardware. After all, no kitchen is complete without cabinet door hinges and you want your revitalized kitchen to be everything you dreamed it could be.
Similar to the butt hinge but used only on flush doors; doors that rest within the frame, are butterfly hinges. These cabinet door hinges are also constructed with two flaps with screw holes held together by a pin. The difference is these hinges are mounted on the outside of the door and frame giving your cabinet a decorative touch. They are available in several styles to suit your taste ranging from colonial to art deco and more.
There are several types of door hinge available. The most common is the butt hinge. This consists of two flaps with screw holes attached by a pin or a rod. To take the door down all you would have to do is remove the pins. You can choose to add finials or balls to the pins for a decorative touch. Garage doors are usually attached with T-hinges. Shaped like the letter T the horizontal part is attached to the door frame while the vertical part is attached to the door. These hinges can be plain or ornamental and lift up rather than out. If you have folding doors you might use a Soss hinge. Named for its inventor this door hinge is recessed into the door edges so when the door is folded it is completely concealed. It must be installed exactly or it will not work.
By and large one of the most important inventions for everyday use isnt very large at all. Because of cabinet door hinges we are able to store things away behind doors that previously would have been on shelves. Although originally used in 1600 B.C., the Romans adapted the hinge for home use. Flash forward to the American colonies and hinges were used everywhere. Eventually they were outfitted for the doors of wagons heading west most prominently by Charles Hager in St. Louis. He founded the present day Hager Hardware Company and in the 1900s received a patent for the compact butt hinge and the rest as they say is history.
